* The trafficking of women and girls for forced labor and sexual exploitation is widespread and often affects the most vulnerable. Forced marriages and child marriages are a violation of human rights of women and girls, but they are widely practiced in many countries of Asia, Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.
* Around the world, as one in five women and one in 10 men reported having been sexually abused in childhood. These children are much more likely to be involved in other forms of abuse later in life.
Hazards
The impact on health can be a direct result of violence or long-term effect of it.
Injuries: physical abuse and sexual abuse by a partner often involve injuries. Dating violence is the leading cause of nonfatal injuries among women in the United States.
* Deaths: Deaths from violence against women include honor killings (committed by relatives for cultural reasons), suicide, female infanticide (killing of infant girls) and maternal deaths from unsafe abortions.
* Sexual and Reproductive Health: Violence against women is associated with sexually transmitted infections, including HIV / AIDS, unwanted pregnancies, gynecological problems, abortions, and problems during pregnancy, such as spontaneous abortion, low birth weight and fetal death.
Risk behaviors: sexual abuse during childhood are associated with higher rates of risky sexual practices (such as early onset of first sexual experience, multiple partners and unprotected sex), substance use and further victimization. Each of these behaviors increases the risk of health problems.
